DeclareKit FAQ
Are the codes guaranteed to be correct?
No. DeclareKit gives suggestions with reasoning and a confidence level, and nothing is written to your store until you approve it. Customs classification is legally the importer's or exporter's responsibility. For complex or high-value goods, confirm with a licensed customs broker.
Doesn't Shopify already suggest HS codes?
Shopify suggests codes one product at a time. DeclareKit works across your whole catalog at once, adds 10-digit US HTS codes, explains each suggestion, and lets you approve in bulk.
Where are codes saved?
In Shopify's native variant customs fields (HS code, country-specific HS codes, country of origin), which Shopify Shipping, customs forms and duty calculations read. The last batch written can be undone.
Where does the country of origin come from?
Only from your product text, when it says where the item was made (for example "Made in Portugal"). If it doesn't, DeclareKit leaves origin for you to fill in rather than guessing.
What counts as a classification?
One variant that receives an AI suggestion. Scans, CSV imports and manual edits don't count. The Free plan includes 25 in total; paid plans include an allowance every 30-day billing period. Development stores aren't counted.
What is your refund policy?
Ask within 14 days of any DeclareKit charge and we'll refund that charge in full, no reason needed. Email support@declarekit.com with your store's myshopify.com address and the charge date. The refund goes back through your Shopify bill. Paid access ends as soon as the refund is issued: the subscription is cancelled and AI suggestions are turned off for the store (the Free allowance doesn't apply after a refund). Your codes already in Shopify, CSV export and import, Undo and uninstall keep working. See the terms.
How do I cancel?
Open the Plans tab in the app and move to Free, or uninstall the app. Either one cancels your subscription right away and stops future charges.
Does it calculate duties or file customs entries?
No. DeclareKit focuses on getting your product customs data right. Shopify and your carrier or broker handle duties and filing.
What data do you access?
Product and variant data only: titles, descriptions, types, tags, vendor, SKU and existing customs fields. Product text is sent to OpenAI's API to generate suggestions. We don't access customer or order data, and we never sell data. See the privacy policy.
How do I install it?
DeclareKit installs from the Shopify App Store. It is in App Store review right now; once it's approved, Get the app opens the listing. You can start on the Free plan.
Who runs DeclareKit?
Kyle Judson, an independent developer. Mailing address: DeclareKit, PO Box 103, Holden, MA 01520, USA. See About.
How is it different from other customs apps?
See Why DeclareKit for a comparison with typical customs apps and spreadsheet workflows, including what DeclareKit doesn't do.
